This culturally and economically significant area hosts 2,700 professionals from global firms within Catalyst, alongside the historic landmarks of Thompson Dock & Pumphouse, HMS Caroline and Alexandra Dock. It offers untapped potential to diversify and expand Belfast’s successful Titanic tourism offering and boost Catalyst’s economic contribution by increasing investor appeal and public engagement.
As a continuation of the Harbour Park, a softer, green corridor including a living shoreline, trim trail, and a boat launch could lay the foundations for the emergence of a ‘tech campus’ landscape for Catalyst and connect Thompson Dock with the wider hinterland.
Replacing the surface level car park at the northern end of the site with a multi-story car park could allow for a meaningful connection between Thompson Dock and Queens Road.
The home of Thompson Dock, the historic monument where Titanic was fitted out, this character area is of unique maritime quality
and subject to great public interest. With development plans for Thompson Dock to become an event space and the successful growth of Catalyst as an innovation centre, there is an opportunity for an integrated approach between the two entities. With the consolidation of surface level parking through a multi-storey car park Catalyst could take on a more ‘tech campus’ character, whilst Thompson Dock and the associated pumphouse can become a great public and economic resource.
